about

LOOKING BACK TO THE FUTURE

Nostalgia can sometimes seem self-indulgent and superfluous, particularly to the young. It is fundamentally an old person’s game and there’s a very good reason for that. Life is, for each of us, a path through experience, but all paths end at some point. As we begin our journey, it is only natural to look forward to the road ahead and to ponder what may be in store for us. The joy at this point in our travels is the speculation of what may be around the corner. However, as we reach that point in our progress where it becomes inescapably evident that our path is coming to an end, the natural tendency is to shift our perspective to look backwards across the terrain we’ve traversed. As the steps forward dwindle in their number, it no longer offers any great inspiration to consider the road ahead. Instead, one looks back upon past accomplishments and, hopefully, finds enough value in them to consider one’s journey to have been worthwhile. The joy in seniority is to revel in one’s achievements and celebrate their merits. The young who do not imagine the future are hopeless and the old who do not celebrate the past have not lived.

ANOTHER REMIX ALBUM

This set of remixes focuses on compositions created during the first few years of using a digital audio workspace (DAW). In this case, it was an early version of Logic Audio (V4, if memory serves). The material selected was originally produced between September 2000 & December 2002. It was during this period when a Mac G4 computer was acquired which could ably run the Logic software, including various plugins for virtual instruments and FX processors, and host the sample libraries which were rapidly expanding. This was a new era of audio production after working in the analogue domain for 20 years beginning in 1981. Moving into a fully digital workspace opened up a world of possibilities, particularly in terms of multi-track recording. Where it had once been a luxury to have 4 or 8 tracks on an analogue home recording system, digital workstations could accommodate seemingly unlimited numbers of tracks. There were still limitations in terms of simultaneous recording as the MOTU 828 audio interface had limited inputs, but it was enough to get into some far more ambitious productions. Yet this era was still primitive in comparison to the enhancements of the software and hardware which would come in later years. Over the course of this evolution, efforts were made to ensure all multi-track master sessions remained compatible with current tools. This involved “hop-scotch” updating of the files, first converting them to Logic 7 standard, then to Logic Pro 9 (this is still the current version being run on our 11 year old production system). Having all sessions since 2000 accessible has meant that the potential for remixing has long been an option, though this resource has mostly been exploited for re-purposing small elements from older works for new compositions rather than full remixes of old ones. It is only in recent months that the prospect of re-thinking these works in their entirety has been seriously considered. The reason for that is because only now do the possibilities inherent in that process seem to offer a chance to simultaneously rediscover past achievements and realize their latent hidden potential.

ANAZANAUT

Walking with the broken rocks upon the heaving thrust of mountain echoes, movement becomes challenged. Something may have taken hold here, but its residue has since faded into the dust of winds long blown away. Though memory shards crack and splinter through the ice age history once foretold, there are now no more than fragments upon a beach receding beyond the breaking waves. ... more
