about

THERE ISN’T A PLACE YOU CAN BE

We have fallen through the veil of reality and found ourselves dislocated from time and space. Where once stars, fixed in their orbits, offered a sense of direction and orientation, now we wander through vaguely defined dimensions where boundaries shift at whim and reference points prescribe no contiguous relationships. Meanings have become subjective dementia and experience is no more than an hallucination. Glimpsing fragmentary specters offers no sense of solace in companionship, for they are no more than phantoms set upon us to torment and antagonize our sensibilities. Kinship has found itself exiled into wastelands beyond the illumination of any cartography. Lost and wandering through infinite corridors, twisted and obscured, there is only a solemn sense of foreboding as we stumble aimlessly about in our hopeless quest for extrication. If this be the damnation visited upon us for our follies, then I shall take mine in greener spaces, where the chaos of happenstance offers a loneliness displaced from desire.

YOU WERE NOT MEANT TO BE

This compilation has been assembled from resurrected compositions which were deemed to be no longer fully satisfactory in their original execution, though they possessed elements which, given modified configuration, offered potentials to render them into far more palatable forms. At the time of their initial construction, the objectives of the producer disposed them to be organized in a manner which has not held up to the passage of time. Retrospective examination has revealed flaws which can readily be remedied with the benefit of hindsight and evolved perspectives. Thus they have been unearthed from their archival tombs, stripped of any unfavorable attributes and augmented with whatever supplemental elements were deemed necessary in order to complete their transformation.

Conceptually, this assemblage is deeply influenced by the evolution of “liminal space” concepts which have become so prominent in recent years. The emergence of the concept of unsettling and abandoned transitional spaces dovetailed with the impact of the recent pandemic and its effects on social relationships. During the height of this event, when it was most desirable to limit interaction with other people, the idea of seeking out places of limited population became essential as a distraction from the events of the day. The presence of a large forested area in the nearby national park offered a unique opportunity to explore and divert away from populated areas. It was during these excursions into the deepest parts of the forest in this park, well off established trails, that the strange, surreal and “liminal” aspects of the forest made their impression. Discoveries of unexpected artifacts and remnants of unusual visitations only heightened the sense of mystery, wonder and suspense which lurked throughout the trees and bushes. The audio and visual elements assembled in this artifact are intended to evoke those feelings, if possible.

This remix collection was compiled and assembled during the period from February 19 to March 18, 2023. All materials manifested, sourced, manipulated and assembled by ANAZANAUT. Forest photographs were taken at various locations throughout Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia, between July 2021 and March 2022.

ANAZANAUT

Walking with the broken rocks upon the heaving thrust of mountain echoes, movement becomes challenged. Something may have taken hold here, but its residue has since faded into the dust of winds long blown away. Though memory shards crack and splinter through the ice age history once foretold, there are now no more than fragments upon a beach receding beyond the breaking waves. ... more
